Effective EMDR Therapy in Great Falls, Montana

EMDR in Great Falls, MT

  • What is it?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing) is a therapeutic approach designed to help individuals process and heal from traumatic experiences. Remember: trauma is any unhealed emotional wound, so EMDR can be used widely across most individuals.

  • How does it work?

Through structured sessions, clients are guided to recall distressing memories while simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation. This dual focus facilitates the reprocessing of traumatic memories, reducing their emotional charge and allowing for healthier perspectives.

  • Bilateral stimulation?

While eye movements are the traditional method of bilateral stimulation, most of my clients choose to utilize my remote hand pulsars that I can control from an app. Other method of bilateral stimulation include self tapping or audio sounds delivered through a headset.

I have utilized EMDR in Great Falls with a majority of my clients, and together we have healed wounds ranging from losing a loved one, to getting over a failed relationship, to experiencing a tumultuous mother-daughter relationship in adolescence (and so many more).

The science.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is rooted in the understanding of how the brain processes traumatic memories. When we experience trauma, the amygdala, which regulates emotions, becomes overactive, leading to heightened anxiety and distress. Meanwhile, the hippocampus, responsible for memory storage, can struggle to properly encode these experiences, causing them to remain fragmented and distressing.

During EMDR therapy, bilateral stimulation engages both hemispheres of the brain. This dual processing helps facilitate communication between the amygdala and the hippocampus, allowing the brain to integrate traumatic memories more effectively. As a therapist in Great Falls, MT, I guide clients through this process, helping them reframe their experiences and reduce the emotional charge attached to those memories. By harnessing the brain's natural healing mechanisms, EMDR can lead to lasting relief and improved mental health.
